BLUESTREAM

Driver Privacy Notice

Last updated 1 September 2026

In short

The app records your vehicle's position only while a shift is open. It starts when you start a shift and stops when you end it. A notification stays on your screen the whole time it is recording, so you always know.

It does not record where you are outside your shift. It does not listen to your microphone, read your messages, look at your contacts, or track what else you do on your phone.

Why you are reading this

Your employer uses Bluestream to manage their vehicles. We make the software; they decide to use it and they decide what happens with what it records. This notice tells you exactly what the app on your phone does, in plain terms, so you are not guessing.

When the app records your position

Only between starting a shift and ending it. There is no other time when the app collects location.

  • When you start a shift, one position is recorded immediately.
  • While the shift is open, a position is recorded roughly every 250 metres the vehicle moves, plus an occasional one when it is stationary so the record does not simply stop.
  • When you end the shift, one final position is recorded and recording stops.
While it is recording, your phone shows a notification reading “Bluestream: shift active. Recording vehicle position until you end your shift.” If that notification is not there, the app is not recording your location. If it is there and you did not start a shift, tell your employer.

What else the app records

  • The readings you enter. Odometer, fuel level, fuel added, and any note you write.
  • When you entered them, and which vehicle.
  • Your name, phone number and username, as set up by your employer. The app does not ask for your personal email address, and your login is not a real email address that can receive mail.

Readings you take with no signal are stored on your phone and sent when a connection returns. Nothing is lost, and nothing extra is collected while you are offline.

Who can see it

  • Your employer's administrators. They see your shifts, your readings, and the route the vehicle took during your shifts.
  • Bluestream staff. We can access it to keep the service running and to help your employer when something looks wrong. Every time we do, it is recorded in a log we cannot edit.
  • You. Your own readings are visible in the app.

It is not shared with anyone else, not sold, and not used for advertising.

What it is used for

The purpose is working out why a vehicle's running costs change. Most of the time the answer is the vehicle, the load, or the route, not the person driving it.

  • Each vehicle is measured against its own history, so an older van is not judged against a newer one.
  • The recorded distance is compared with the odometer readings, which is how a faulty gauge or a mis-keyed number gets caught.
  • Where drivers are compared with each other, it is only between drivers of the same vehicle, and the load carried is recorded each shift for the same reason. Nobody is marked down for being handed the oldest truck or the heaviest run.
Being honest about the other side of this: the system does flag readings that do not add up, and your employer can see those flags. It is a record of what happened with a vehicle, and it can be used in a conversation about your work. We would rather tell you that directly than let you discover it.

What the app does not do

  • It does not record your location outside an open shift.
  • It does not use your microphone or camera.
  • It does not read your messages, contacts, photos, or call history.
  • It does not track which other apps you use, or what you do on your phone.
  • It does not record audio or video at any time.

You can check this yourself: the app asks for location and notifications, and nothing else. Your phone's settings will show you the full list of permissions it has been granted.

How long it is kept

Readings and shift records are kept for as long as your employer keeps their account. Position history is stored month by month and older months are removed on a schedule your employer agrees with us.

If your account is closed, the record of shifts you completed remains, because it is part of the vehicle's history and your employer relies on it. Your ability to sign in ends immediately.

Your rights, and who to ask

You can ask to see what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected if it is wrong, and in some cases ask for it to be deleted.

Ask your employer first. The data is theirs. We hold it for them, and we are not permitted to hand it over or delete it without their instruction. If you cannot get an answer from them, contact us. We will pass your request to them, confirm to you that we have done so, and press them for an answer. We can only give you the data itself if they instruct us to, or if the law requires it of us directly.

Depending on where you work, you may also have rights under local employment or data protection law that your employer cannot sign away on your behalf. Where such rights exist, nothing in this notice limits them.
